Show Your Ugly Truck Pride

July 20th is designated National Ugly Truck Day and we want to recognize these often overlooked workhorses. They aren’t just unsightly vehicles plowing down the road, barely passing emissions. These are our well worn companions who have worked hard alongside us through the years.

Each truck starts  it’s own unique journey when it rolls off the assembly line. It could be traveling across the country to work in any trade. From logging in Oregon, to pulling a camper down route 66 pickups are there to do the jobs other vehicles can’t handle.

Sure a new shiny truck has room for the whole family, offers options we never dreamed of 20 years ago and is by far, the most comfortable to ride in. But an old ugly truck has character; its been on adventures. When you talk to ugly truck owners they all have a story to tell.  A colleague shared this account of his truck pride.

My ugly truck is a ’87 Ford F150, ‘Ole Betsy’, I inherited her from my dad. When my family was young, the five of us would pile in to go get our Christmas tree every year. Seating was a little tight so we all had to squish together.  I learned how to drive in the fields the summer I turned eleven. I would coast Ole Betsy forward while dad threw haybales in the back.

When I turned 16, I got the pleasure of driving this rickty truck around town. I was proud to be the only one my friends who knew how to drive stick and could handle the tempermental clutch. These days Betsy has hay in every crevice of her interior, she shakes and sputters along, and there is no amount of washing that could possibly clean her. Yet at twenty three years old, when most cars would be rendered useless in a landfill, she still runs around the farm, helping to feed the animals in the winter and bale hay every summer.

We want to see your Ugly Truck Pride, send us your photos. The uglier the better, if it’s got scratches, dents, bad paintjob or the bumper is held on by duct tape we want to see your pic. We’ll try to share as many of the photographs on our website as possible.

This is not a contest, sorry no prizes, just a way to recognize the underrated, overworked trucks that we love. And on July 20th, take out your ugly truck and drive it with pride. You can and should, hold an Ugly Truck contest today. But whatever you do, don't wash or wax your truck today!
